The Divided Kingdom
Orphanage given name: Eitan (strong) Matan (gift)
I never knew my parents. I grew up in an orphanage. As a young boy, I was stocky, but still nimble. I was not a good pickpocket like some of the other boys at the home, but I was quick on my feet. I outgrew life at the orphanage and had to move out on my own at the age of 15. For work, I became a dock hand for a local import and export company in the seaside dock community. I was strong and agile, helping load and unload cargo ships that came into port from all over the world.
An occasional barroom brawl and accidental killing was not a rare occurrence in the dockside area where I lived and worked. But when you kill a snotty, arrogant, little, fast-talking idiot in the bar that just happens to be the provincial governor’s son – certain things are bound to follow. Knowing that I could not stay any longer in my current position, I had to leave town. While packing to go, three of governor’s guards tracked me down. Now the first two I killed outright, but the third I left severely maimed, but in good enough condition to convey a message to the provincial governor – I was sorry about the killing, but his son had it coming, and I considered the matter finished.
In order to put a lot of space between me and my past actions, I traveled to a place where I had heard numerous stories about based on my time at the docks: Greece. Trading ships from the many islands of Greece passed through the ports on a regular basis, and I had heard a multitude of tales of life in this far away land.
Finding work in the docks in one of the various ports of the isles of Greece was easy, and I settled into a new life similar to the one I had and recently left. After several years of hard labor, a local mercenary offered me a position with his group of hired arms after watching me in a bar fight, taking out four sizable opponents. Now I had never had any formal weapons training, but he was so impressed with my agility, dexterity, and outright street smarts, he hired me as a prospect with massive potential.
My new employer had me pass along my knowledge of fancy footwork and agile mobility to his group of fellow mercenaries, and in return, I learned the art of weapon wielding. I trained for over a decade, learning new weapons skills and perfecting my timing, strength, and brutal killing prowess. My main proficiency is with large, two-handed weapons that deal heavy damage: swords, axes, and hammers. Throughout this time, our group of mercenaries was hired to fend off various invasions, attacks, and raids from the northern Greek kingdoms and tribal states set on conquering southern Greece.
Now being that acquaintances from my hometown area traveled to and from Greece, I was not surprised when connections to my past found me there. Even though I considered the killing of the provincial governor’s son closed, apparently the governor did not. I knew I had to return to my birthplace and take care of the problem once and for all.
When I arrive back in town to plot my course of action, I learned the governor had become so corrupt and vile in his dealings that killing him would not only solve my problem, but also be appropriate. I murdered the provincial governor. And not to my surprise, no effort was made to caught the culprit for this crime – the community was actually relieved and glad to be rid of that menace to society.
